ANIMATION ENHANCEMENTS new to 3ds max 5

Feature

Benefit

CHARACTER NODE

The Character Node allows animators to define any given group of objects as a "Character" – this works integrally with other features such as Skin Pose, Loading/Saving Animation, etc.

Improved Workflow

This brings an assembly of elements together for management of rigging and animation data. Makes management of scenes easier, gives artists more time to concentrate on creating rather than searching.

BONE TOOLS

Bone Tools is a collection of time-saving tools for building and modifying skeletal structures (bones) at any stage.

Improved Workflow

Build IK chains faster, re-purpose existing chains easier, and find all Bone-related tools in a single place.

SET-KEY ANIMATION SYSTEM

Sets keys on only the necessary components (as determined by the artist) of any Character or animated object.

Improved Pose-to-Pose Animation

Animators can now use multiple animation methods within 3ds max software, and Set Key animation allows for a more interactive "Pose and Key" approach without worrying about rogue key frames or unexpected results.

SKIN POSE

Define a mesh as a character’s Skin Pose (e.g. Da Vinci Pose) and selectively return to that pose at any time during the animation process.

Increased Flexibility

(during the animation process)

Non-destructive to animation tracks, allows tweaking of mesh and animation within the same scene to build better results per shot.

LOAD/SAVE ANIMATION

Load/Save keyframe data on character setups, including ability to remap data between characters, and reassign entire body motion or single body parts.

Increased Productivity

Greatly improved management of keyframe data – allows for repurposing of animation data and gives studios flexibility for creating and using larger animation libraries.

PROGRESSIVE MORPHING

Allows for morph interpolation to be non-linear.

Improved Morphs

Removes the need to do extra work between the desired morph targets to build non-linear interpolation. Gives animators flexibility to control morphing more fully by allowing for extra interpolation steps between morphs.

SPLINE IK

An IK Chain Solver that uses a spline as the basis for its shape.

Easier To Animate Limbs & Extensions (tails, etc)

Focus on the nuance of animation, rather than fighting chains of small bones. Use Spline tangency to define animation interpolation; giving new controls to animators to find the exact result they need for the task at hand.

ANIMATABLE VERTEX COLORS

Game developers now have the ability to animate the vertex colors of either polygon or patch models.

Build More Realistic Real-Time Environments

Provides artists with the tools they need to create more engaging environments based on vertex lighting.

VERTEX WEIGHT TABLE

A spreadsheet view of vertex weighting assignments, which also allows for loading/saving of vertex data.

Easier To Manage

Greatly improved workflow for dealing with Vertex Weight Assignments.

FUNCTION CURVE EDITOR

New Track View Function Curve Editor adds Drawing Curves, new Flat Tangents, and is easier to navigate.

Improved Productivity

Greatly enhanced interactivity with Function Curves makes the animation process more fluid, improving feedback for the artist and giving a better "feel" for how animations are timed.

DOPE SHEET EDITOR

New Graph representing keyframe layout for animators to easily manage animation timing. Move, scale, retime, copy/paste keyframes (including "soft" keyframe selections).

Efficiently Manage Keyframes Of Complex Scenes

A simple, easy to read graph of animation data makes keyframe management easier for the artist.

DYNAMICS

Discreet’s reactor™ software is now included in 3ds max. Refer to the reactor tech spec and Features & Benefits guide for more information.

Greater Control Of Dynamics Solutions

Build dynamics solutions quickly with interactive testing of Hard Body, Soft Body, Rope/Chain, Cloth, and Fluid Surface Solvers.

WEIGHTED CONTROLLERS

Blend animation modes on an object, allowing for greater flexibility within any given animation track.

Superior Animation Control

Define an object’s animation style exactly, by applying and weighting multiple controllers to get the desired effect.

TEXTURING ENHANCEMENTS new to 3ds max 5

Feature

Benefit

UV TOOLS

A re-designed UV unwrap interface puts common tools and tasks at the artist’s fingertips. 3 Unwrapping types (Flatten, Normal, and Unfold) and a slew of selection & navigation tools are now available to make texturing more predictable and easier to manage.

Improved Workflow

Create automatic texture layouts to save time painting your textures – work faster (and probably have more fun). Work predictably with the model and retain the control needed to dig into the details when needed.

PSD SUPPORT

Build all of your model’s maps within the same .PSD file and allocate layers accordingly.

Improved Workflow

Build textures faster, and manage assignment of Light Maps, Normal Maps, specular, diffuse, & all of the channels you might need to assign through one single texture file.

SCENE MANAGEMENT TOOLS new to 3ds max 5

Feature

Benefit

NAMED SELECTION SETS

Create easy-to-manage groups of scene objects with an intuitive interface.

Improved workflow

Keep track of scene data, assign groups of objects to multiple selection sets, build scenes with Compositing Layers in mind.

LAYERS

Place multiple objects and scene elements on "layers" with an easy to use manager that enables quick revealing/hiding/freezing of scene data.

Improved Scene Management

Keep track of scene data, build 3D elements with Compositing Layers in mind. Intelligently groups scene data and provides commonly used Layering commands.

MODELING ENHANCEMENTS new to 3ds max 5

Feature

Benefit

POLYGONAL MODELING TOOLS

Extended Polygonal modeling tools, with greater degrees of interactivity, and better ways of selecting & managing polygons and selection sets.

Enhancements include:

  • Grow and Shrink Selections
  • Support for shaded faces with Soft Selection
  • Repeat Last Operation
  • Constrain Translation to Edges and Faces
